Tuning Methods and Tuning Figures of Merit for LC Oscillators
نویسندگان
چکیده
LC oscillators are used most widely in wireless applications as their resonator can store energy, making its phase noise to carrier ratio given a certain power budget superior to ring oscillators. The tuning range of LC oscillators, especially at high frequencies where parasitic capacitance starts becoming significant, is another important design issue. This paper investigates the influence of tuning methods on the oscillator phase noise. Five tuning methods are compared: varactor tuning, band switching, oscillator switching, active tuning, and phase shift tuning . In addition, for the tuning methods active tuning and phase shift tuning, effective quality factors are introduced as a figure of merit to assess the phase noise performance. Finally, a figure of merit is introduced that makes a comparison between tuning methods possible by normalizing the quality factor of tuning methods for a given tuning range. متن کاملCurrent State of Integrated Oscillator Design
Different methods to build integrated resonators and frequency tuning elements are reviewed. Two new figures of merit are defined and used to compare voltage-controlled oscillators (VCO) reported by various authors. It is shown that bipolar and CMOS VCOs can achieve similar performances. Introduction A large number of integrated resonator-based oscillators have been reported during the last few...
متن کاملAnalysis of emitter degenerated LC oscillators using bipolar technologies
The effects of emitter degeneration on the oscillation frequency, output noise and tuning range of an emitter degenerated LC oscillator designed using bipolar transistors (BJT) is analyzed. Simulation results show increased oscillation frequency, tuning range and carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR). Design guidelines for emitter degenerated LC oscillators are also given.

This paper presents a rigorous phase noise analysis in the 1 f region for the differential CMOS LC-tank oscillator with both nMOS and pMOS switch pairs. A compact, closed-form phase noise equation is obtained, accounting for the noise contributions from both tank losses and transistors currents, which allows a robust comparison between LC oscillators built with either one or two switch pairs.
